Kruger National Park
Unmatched biodiversity and a road network you can genuinely drive yourself. The one exception to the 4×4 rule: a normal car (a VW Polo or similar) gets you through Kruger perfectly well.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Red dunes, dry riverbeds and a very different kind of quiet. Remote: this is where the spare fuel, the water and the recovery gear stop being a checklist and start being the plan.

What you need for the planning
Kruger National Park
How long
5 to 7 nights
Fewer than four and you spend the trip driving between camps instead of watching anything. A week lets you sit still when something is happening, which is when the good sightings actually occur.
When
May to September, dry winter
The best months for wildlife. The grass is short and thin, the bush has lost its leaves, and animals concentrate at the remaining water. Cool mornings, mild days, cold before dawn in an open vehicle. Also the busiest period, and the one where camps fill up first.
Driving
The only park in this list you can drive in an ordinary hire car. Tar and well-graded gravel throughout the main network.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
How long
4 to 6 nights
The distances decide it. Two nights on each riverbed plus the day it takes to get in and out is the shortest version that does not feel like a transfer with animals beside it.
When
March to May and September to October
The most comfortable months. Warm days, cool nights, good light. The transition seasons are the sweet spot in the Kalahari, and they are less obvious than the winter, so the camps are easier to get.
Driving
The riverbed tracks are gravel and sand and are corrugated for long stretches. Tyre damage is the single most common problem visitors have here.

Where routes go wrong
- Booking a different camp every night. Packing up costs you the first hours of light, which are the hours worth having.
- Planning the day by distance. Fifty kilometres of gravel with a leopard in the middle of it is a whole morning.
- Driving straight past the small stuff. The dung beetle and the ground hornbill are the sightings people remember once the lion photographs all look the same.
- Underestimating the tyres. Corrugated gravel over long distances is what ends most trips early here, not the sand.
- Treating the dune roads between the riverbeds as a shortcut. They are the slow part, not the quick one.
- Arriving without enough water and fuel for the leg after the next one. There is no shop between the camps.
Questions about this country
Can I really drive Kruger in a normal hire car? Kruger National Park
Yes. That is what makes it different from the other four parks in this list. The main network is tar and graded gravel, and the camps are inside the park. A 4×4 buys you a handful of extra tracks, not a different trip.
Is it safe to self-drive? Kruger National Park
Within the rules, yes, and the rules are short: stay in the car except at marked points, keep to the speed limits, be inside a camp by closing time. Almost every incident involves someone who ignored one of the three.
Do I have to book camps in advance? Kruger National Park
For the dry winter months, yes, and early — that is the season everybody wants. In the green summer you have far more room to decide as you go.
Will I see the Big Five? Kruger National Park
All five live there and plenty of people see four in a week. Anybody who promises you five is selling something. Leopard is the one that decides it.
Is malaria a problem? Kruger National Park
Kruger is a malaria area, low risk in the dry winter and higher in the wet summer. It belongs in a conversation with your doctor before you book, not in the packing list afterwards.
Do I need a 4×4? Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
For the riverbed tracks, high clearance matters more than four-wheel drive. For the dune roads between them and for anything on the Botswana side, a proper 4×4 is not optional.
Are there elephant and rhino? Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
No. No elephant, no rhino, no buffalo, no hippo. This is a desert park, and what it has instead — predators in open country, oryx, bat-eared fox, meerkat — you will not see like this anywhere else.
How cold does it actually get? Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Below freezing on winter nights, regularly. People pack for Africa and then sit in an open vehicle at dawn in June wishing they had not.
Can I cross into Botswana? Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Yes, and it is a border crossing with everything that implies, plus routes that have to be arranged in advance. It is worth doing and it is not a spontaneous decision.
Is there mobile coverage? Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
At Twee Rivieren, mostly. Beyond it, assume none. That is a planning parameter here, not an inconvenience.
