You’ll need a valid driver’s license, passport, vehicle registration documents, and depending on the country, an International Driving Permit. Some parks also require advance booking confirmations and park permits. If crossing borders, you’ll need appropriate visas and temporary vehicle import permits.
A 4×4 vehicle with high ground clearance is essential. SUVs like Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers are ideal. The vehicle should have good air conditioning, reliable spare tires, and enough space for supplies. Avoid small cars as they may struggle with rough terrain and can’t provide adequate visibility for wildlife viewing.
Pack plenty of water (at least 5 liters per person per day), a first-aid kit, basic vehicle repair tools, extra fuel cans, a GPS device or physical maps, a flashlight, emergency food supplies, and a fully charged satellite phone or communication device. Also bring binoculars, a camera, and guidebooks for wildlife identification.
The dry season (typically June to October) is best for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense. However, the green (wet) season offers fewer crowds, lower prices, and lush landscapes but may have muddy roads and fewer animal sightings.
Remain calm and inside your vehicle. If an animal blocks the road:
• Give it space to move
• Never honk, rev the engine, or attempt to drive around it
•If it’s an elephant, keep at least 50 meters away and back up if it appears agitated
